Religion
Students will learn through prayer, stories, activities and discussion about the Catholic faith. Catholic values are integrated in all subject areas.
 
Students will focus on:

• Traditional prayers: Our Father, Sign of the Cross, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Grace before meals
• Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
• Explain how God reveals Himself to us
• Tell and understand the Christmas story
• Tell and understand the Easter story
• Tell and understand stories of Jesus’ parables
• Tell and understand stories of Jesus’ miracles
• Explain why all life is sacred
• Participate at mass
• Know that Baptism is the first sacrament

 
Language Arts
Students will develop skills to enhance their reading and writing.
 
Students will focus on:

• Phonemic awareness
• Handwriting, punctuation and capitalization
• Recognizing nouns, verbs and adjectives
• Listening skills and following directions
• Recognizing word patterns and phonemes
• Use graphic organizers to assist in the writing process
• Apply grade appropriate mechanics to a sentence to communicate clearly in writing
• Write opinion pieces that include the topic, reasons, and closure
• Write informative pieces that include the topic, facts, and closure
• Write narrative pieces the include sequenced events, details, and closure

 
Literature
Students will develop fluency, comprehension, and interpretation of the written information.
 
Students will focus on:

• Strengthen fluency and comprehension skills
• Initial and final consonants, blends and endings, long and short vowels
• Sight words
• Vocabulary
• Use context clues to determine word meaning
• Make predictions with text support
• Identify main topic and retell key details with prompting and support
• Summarize text including sequence of main events
• Read grade appropriate materials with fluency and accuracy
• Identify the role of authors and illustrators

 
Math
Students will practice math concepts and problem-solving strategies to further develop number sense and problem-solving skills.
 
Students will focus on:

• Identifying, writing, and order numbers 1-100
• Addition and subtraction of numbers up to 20
• Skip-count from any given number by 10
• Recognizes time (months, days, hour and half hour)
• Recognizes, identifies and counts money (penny, nickel, dime, and dollar)
• Compares and orders objects by physical attribute
• Estimation
• Measurement
• Solving word problems
• Introduced to two-digit addition and subtraction

 
Science
Student will use hands-on experiences to understand science in our world.
 
Students will focus on:

• What is a scientist?
• Animals – habitats, comparison of offspring to adult, lifecycles, metamorphosis
• Plants – lifecycles, functions of parts
• Magnets
• Patterns and cycles in nature and space
• Light and sound
• Energy

Social Studies

Students will develop an awareness of people around them.
 
Students will focus on:

• Native Americans
• Key individuals in American history
• Rules and laws
• Where people live – communities, cities, suburbs, farms
• Rights and responsibilities of a Christian citizen
• Development of values, traditions, and customs in the U.S.
• Basic skill required to study geography
• Individual development and identity in society

  
Homework

Frist graders are encouraged to read and practice math facts every night and will have other homework as needed for studying purposes. On average, students should expect 15-20 minutes of homework daily.
Parents are encouraged to show interest in homework and read daily to their child for 15-20 minutes.
