Religion
Students will learn about their Catholic Faith by participating in the sacraments, praying, doing service, discussing, and reflecting. Our Catholic values are emphasized throughout the entire school day as we model the 3^rd motto: Be Kind.

Students will study:

• How Christ affects our life
• Bible stories with an emphasis on parables and miracles
• Liturgical planning and weekly Mass
• Weekly Adoration
• Daily prayer and learning the joyful mysteries of the Rosary
• Liturgical Seasons of the church
• Sacraments including going to Reconciliation

Literature/Reading
Students will strengthen fluency and comprehension by studying a variety of genres and reading rigorously throughout the curriculum. The Daily 5 Method is used along with 100+ read aloud books throughout the year.
 
Students will study:

• Vocabulary
• Phonics
• Decoding and fluency
• Comprehension skills and strategies: making predictions, inferences, context clues, sequencing, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, main idea and details, summarizing, drawing conclusions, graphic organizers, story maps, and author’s purpose.

Language Arts/Grammar/Writing
Third graders will continue to develop grammar, writing, and speaking skills throughout all subject areas.
 
Students will study:

• Parts of speech
• Mechanics of writing and grammar
• Pre-writing through publishing
• Writing in a variety of formats including: paragraph writing, narratives, biographies, poetry, letters, opinions, and research projects
• Present a variety of projects in different formats
• Spelling will learn required words and apply skills in daily written work
• Cursive writing

 
Mathematics
Third Graders will acquire knowledge of mathematics and problem-solving skills. Students will apply these skills in a variety of ways using text, extending activities, and hands on games.
 
Students will study:

• Math facts: addition and subtraction, multiplication and division through 12
• Place value and rounding
• Four-digit addition and subtraction
• Multiplication and division concepts
• Properties, expressions, and equations
• Fractions as a part of a whole, and a set
• Measurement: capacity, mass, and time
• Data: pictographs, bar graphs, line plots
• Perimeter and area
• Introduction of geometry

 
Science
Third graders will use critical thinking skills to investigate the world around them. Students will explore science through observing, predicating, experimenting, questioning, and explaining.

• Life Cycles
• Ecosystems
• Weather
• STEM
• Coding

 
Social Studies
Students will endeavor to be good global citizens by learning about other people, places, and cultures. They will study the past to build a better future.
 
Students will study:

• Map and globe skills: being able to put all 50 states on a map
• Chart and graph skills: timelines, bar graphs, and tables
• Communities: urban, rural, and suburban
• 3 Branches of Government and Mock Congress
• Economics: supply, demand, & giving alms
• Famous Americans
• Native Americans
• State Research Project

Homework
Third graders will be assigned weekly homework packets that include: spelling list, vocabulary, math practice sheets, and a list of activities, projects, and tests. Math facts should be practiced frequently, in addition to the homework of the day. Students should be reading a minimum of 20 minutes a day at least 5 days a week. It is vital that students still read with parents some of the time and everyone should be reading chapter books.
