The Art Curriculum at St. Thomas More Catholic School is centered around the elements and principles of art. Each grade level has art class once a week.
The art program is introduced in preschool focusing on exercising fine motor skills and the process of art making and creativity. This continues into Kindergarten and 1st grade while also introducing various artistic skills and techniques. Concepts and skills are expanded on each year following building on prior knowledge and experience.
Art history is incorporated into many lessons emphasizing that artists are not only those who paint famous paintings but are those who help us see the world through different eyes. An interdisciplinary approach is frequently utilized connecting the classroom and the art room. Technology is used as a teaching tool where appropriate.
Students are given many opportunities to choose how they will be creative, thus helping them learn how to improve in their decision making and develop their own creative process. The goal is to help all students reach for their creative potential and do it all for the glory of God.
