The Resource Program at St. Thomas More School mostly concentrates on early intervention and remediation of reading skills for the primary grade students.

• The resource teacher “pushes-in” to the PreK room daily and directs the whole group to develop phonemic awareness skills using the Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum.

• The Kindergarten students also develop their phonemic awareness skills daily with our resource teacher using the Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum as well. In addition to this program our resource teacher introduces the sound/symbol relationship of the letters using  Wilson Fundations Program and incorporating parts of the Lindamood LiPs Program as well. These programs are designed to enhance the Houghton Mifflin Journeys Reading Series taught by the classroom teacher in an effort to prevent possible remediation in first grade. 

• First grade students who are not reaching grade-level expectations are pulled out for one-on-one intervention using FOUNDATIONS IN SOUND Pre-Reading Program, Barton Reading and Spelling System, and Equipped for Reading Success. This resource time for chosen students is in addition to the Houghton Mifflin Journeys Reading Series taught by the classroom teacher in an effort to get them up to grade-level expectations by second grade.

• Students in second through fourth grade that have a Student Service Plan receive one-on-one pull out resource services using Barton Reading and Spelling System, and Equipped for Reading Success. 

The resource teacher’s responsibilities also include writing and maintaining the Student Service Plans for all students in the building. This includes setting up and conducting annual reviews and making sure that classroom accommodations for each student is being provided.
